Jason Franks has a PhD in International Relations from the University of St Andrews. His research interests are Terrorism, Conflict and Peace and the nexus between these contested concepts, and he has a regional interest in the Middle East – particularly the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. His PhD study and subsequent former work as a Research fellow in the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies at the University of St Andrews produced a number of academic publications (see below).
He is also an accomplished university teacher and has experience in convening, co-ordinating and teaching courses at undergraduate and postgraduate Master’s level as well as to mature students and adult learners. This includes lectures, tutoring, seminars, essay and exam marking and dissertation supervision. His specialised knowledge courses included Terrorism, Peace and Conflict as well as generic International Relations modules (see below).
Jason is also a very experienced field researcher and has worked in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel, Cambodia, Kosovo, Timor Leste, Bosnia, Sri Lanka, Middle East, Kashmir, Nepal and Northern Ireland. He is also a project consultant and has worked as a Peacebuilding advisor for a GTZ project in Timor-Leste, where he designed, implemented and helped to coordinate an innovative grassroots peacebuilding pilot project.
He has also worked as a researcher and practitioner in the fields of conflict, security, counterinsurgency, and terrorism for NGOs, private companies, the government. This has included manging projects on post-conflict statebuilding; gender and security; maritime security; conflict, counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism; aviation humanitarian support in conflict and migration and security. These research and consultancy projects have also included fieldwork in Albania, Ghana and South Sudan.
Jason also consults for business intelligence companies and the UK MoD as a freelance subject matter expert – Middle East.
